How to Make a Nature Crown; Outdoor Education
I love turning activities I do with my Kindergarten class and my own kids at home into crowns. Wearing a is crown fun!
From alphabet crowns to crowns for specific sound blends to math-themed crowns. If you haven’t guessed, I love educational activities. You can find out how I recommend you prepare your child for Kindergarten.
Learning though play is the way to go though! Whenever possible I try to make learning as fun as I can with my kiddos…and kids like to dress up so why not add a crown?
Insert my life motto:
I also love that you can do this craft every season and each time the crown will look different.
Easy nature crowns for kids
Nature crowns are great because you really don’t need a lot of materials to create them. All you need is a bit of paper or card stock, scissors, glue, tape or a stapler and any natural materials you can find outside.
If you’re looking for an outdoor ed activity that requires even less materials check out this rock shapes activity or this sidewalk chalk obstacle course.
You’ll need to make sure the paper or card stock is large enough to wrap around your child’s head. I prefer card stock because it is strong enough to hold all sorts of things glued to it.
You’ll need some scissors, white liquid glue and some nature items. You may prefer to collect the items yourself and then have the kids glue them onto their crowns… but it’s much more fun for the kids to get out there and find their own flowers, leaves, rocks and anything else that looks interesting!
I like to cut the paper for the crowns into a regal shape just to add more flair ;)
Here’s a summary of what to do to make your nature crowns:
Materials:
Card stock or paper fit to the child’s head
White liquid glue
Natural materials found outside
Method:
Measure the paper or card stock to the child’s head. Make sure you leave a bit of extra so you can staple or tape the crown together later
Go outside and collect natural items. These might include sticks, small rocks, leaves, flowers, feathers etc. If you happen to gather a few too many sticks you can use them for a fun stick family outdoor ed activity. If you gather too many leaves you will definitely want to sneak in some math with your art and try this nature butterfly craft.
Glue the items found outside on the crown and allow time to dry
Staple or tape the crown together and wear proudly!
If you teach French Immersion, you can use these crowns as a starting point for talking about outdoor vocabulary, or if you are a French Immersion parent you can review the vocab with your kids. Reviewing vocabulary is a great way to help your French Immersion child when you don’t speak French!
